Schoental

Ian Hamilton Finlay’s decision to make the exhibition, Paths, using my photos taken at Little Sparta, and offer it to John Schmid, led to my visiting Schoenthal in the summer of 2001. Situated in the foothills of the Jura, 30 kms south of Basel, the monastery church is converted into an exhibition hall, and the surrounding farmland is carefully planted with sculpture. It was an opportunity to take photographs of this tranquil place, where contemporary sculptors have been invited to collaborate, propose works and then install them in selected positions, inspired by a landscape of steeply raked fields, outcrops of rock, groups of trees, streams and water meadows.
